Atonement – Reviewed

Finally, I got the chance to view a copy of the new film Atonement with Keira Knightly and James McAvoy. To start, I was quite impressed, I though Knightly played her role nicely, even while being quite a depressing character all through the movie. In most of her films, she’s an exciting character, with a lot of energy. In Atonement, she really shows that weird, lonely feeling. That is knew for her, but she plays her part well, leaving only the small contempt for her character. If you have read the book, you will not necessarily enjoy the last thirty minutes of the film, of course, knowing the ending. But for those that already know the story, the artistic presence the film brings to the story is unparalleled. The cinematography and editing is pristine. There is one shot from the movie, Goodfellas, that many people speak of. A long tracking shot of a man walking into a club, it is done very well. Atonement has one of these shots. James McAvoy has just reached the place where all the militiamen are waiting for the ships to bring them home, and he walks around and observes all that is around him. It is a beautiful shot that lasts for about seven minutes. It really adds to the artistry of the movie. In the end, go see this movie. It is simply brilliant. I hope it is nominated for Best Picture in the Academy Awards.
